Summary

One of two bowl barrows on a small knoll at Young Creech. They are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1947. In 1970 this monument was reported as being around 72 feet in diameter with a mound about 4 feet high. This barrow is thought to be one of two barrows at 'Young Creech' explored by antiquarians in the mid-19th century, when several urns containing cremations were found.

Full Description

There are two barrow in "Young Creech", a field belonging to Woodstreet Farm (NY 856856) which were opened about 1831. Several urns were discovered with burnt bones and ashes. <1> Field investigation revealed two barrows near Woodstreet Farm. SY 84838575: Bowl barow, grass covered and spread measuring 24.0m. diameter and an average height of 0.8m. No surface finds were made during field investigation. <2> SY 84838573: Bowl (?) barrow, 72ft. diameter and 4ft. high with trigonometrical station on slightly hollow top. Probably one of two opened in mid 19th century in "Young Creech", when several inurned cremations were found. Also probably one of two formerly noted south of Quarr Hill. <4> The two bowl barrows approximate to the measurements and descriptions of Authority 2. Surveyed at 1:2500 on MSD. <6> One of two bowl barrows on a small knoll at Young Creech. They are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1947 <7> and were digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project. They are still extant on the most recent Google Earth imagery.
