Full Description
The urn was 11 inches (28 cm) high, with overhanging rim. The fabric is reddish-brown on the outside, and it appears to show traces of a buff slip. Inside it is almost entirely black. <2>
Site now built over. <3>
Found on July 2 1930 by W Holly when digging the footings for a block of houses in Castle Lane. The urn was inverted over a cremation, its base being only 7" below the surface. Whilst the adjoining ground was flat, no opportunity arose of searching for the ditch of a possible ploughed out tumulus. Urn bought from J B Calkin in 1949 for Winchester Museum. <4>
