Full Description
A long barrow first identified by Dr R C C Clay in 1926 and excavated by S. Piggott in 1936 prior to housing development. The barrow was found to be surrounded on three sides by a quarry ditch which continued round the burial end of the mound. Within this ditch was a revetment mainly of turf. At the southern end was an oval mound of turf covering faint stains representing decomposed primary inhumations. There were no grave goods but Neolithic A1 pottery came from the primary silting of the ditch. Neolithic B ware, followed by 'A' Beaker and early Bronze Age rusticated wares followed in that order in upper levels of the silting, with characteristic flints. <2>
