Full Description

Sharp fine Acheulian Implements found at base of gravel in Queens Park Avenue in 1935. Calkin Collection British Museum. a. D shaped hand axe, length 4"; controlled flaking. Flat on one face. In mint condition. Found 1935 Queens Park Avenue. Calkin collection, BM.1940-7 b. Levallois flake, length 3". Faceted platform. Sharp but edges slightly damaged. Brownish grey, found 1911 about 10 ft deep in Gravel. Q.P.Avenue. Calkin collection BM 1940-7-1-489 c. Flat pyriform hand axe. length 5.2" Symmetrical Bluey-black with Grey cherty ppatches and incipient basket-work patina. Found probably in 1911. 6 ft deep in Gravel in Rotten Row. Q.P. Avenue. In Russell Cotes Museum. <1-2> J B Calkin Esq. states that these implements came from the area shown on the OS 6" field sheet centred at SZ 10559365. The whole area is now developed. <3> Lower Palaeolithic implements found at Queens Park Avenue, at Rotten Row and Parkside Avenue. At least 8 handaxes, 2 cores, 2 flakes and 3 Levallois cores were found in 1911, 1935 and in the 1930's in general. The artefacts were found just south of the edge of Terrace 10 and on Eocene Sand geology. <5>
