Full Description

Bronze axe of Sicilian type found in sea here in Sept 1937 (now in British Museum). Exact site pointed out to me on the spot (23.4.38) by the finder Mr H C Audin of 370 Holdenhurst Road. <1> (SZ 14109111) Dated from c 750 BC. The axe has a shaft hole like that in a workman's pick. It is suggested that the weapon was either lost from a vessel, or washed from the cliffs. Only one other axe of this type has been found north of the Alps. (Photographs only at Museum). <2> Confirmation of axe in British Museum. <3>
