Full Description

(SZ 17989095) Bought by H Druitt in 1930. Urn found in a low barrow at the entrance to the Canal. Inverted, the base crushed, and only part of the rim recovered. S Pester, who found the urn on 4th April 1930, told J B Calkin in 1949 that it was black, and in the edge of a barrow eroded by the sea. (Sited from plan accompanying notes to SZ 17989096). <1-2> At the position given is a low spread mound, at the entrance to the canal and on the east side of it. It is probably the result of dredging in the 1920s. The mound is low spread and rather shapeless and situated upon saltings. It is almost certainly the result of dredging, as suggested by Mr Brewer, and the pottery was probably simply dredged up. <3> This mound has been completely destroyed. <4>
