Find Spot record MDO8656 - Flints and pottery from Friars Cliff estate, Christchurch
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Prehistoric finds reported from the Friars Cliff estate include Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age potsherds (found in 1929), a Neolithic leaf arrowhead, 2 Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowheads, and a triangular arrowhead. Late Bronze Age pottery was found in circa 1932 at the north west corner of Seaway Avenue. Early Iron Age pottery has also been reported from the Bure Lane area. All these finds were made during the development of the area, and the estate is now entirely built over. A round barrow was also reportedly destroyed during this building work. NB the dating of the pottery noted above is as reported by various Ordnance Survey correspondents during the 1940s and 1950s. [NB It is likely that, in line with subsequent re-dating of later prehistoric pottery, the Late Bronze Age sherds may well belong to the Middle Bronze Age, while the Early Iron Age pottery may be as early as the Late Bronze Age].
