Full Description

The bowl consisted of two or more separate parts, of which only the lowest remains. It was riveted to the upper portion, the rivets remaining. <1> (SZ 15999273) Late Celtic bronze bowl found in Castle Street, 1909?. Now at Newbury Museum. <2> Late Iron Age copper alloy hanging bowl found in a drainage trench in Castle Street to the west of Town Bridge in 1919. <3> Late Celtic Bronze Bowl base only bought by O G S Crawford from a Christchurch antique dealer and presented to Newbury Museum. (Probably bought from Hope in Castle Street. Found at the sewage works opposite his shop). Classified as IA "B" and dated to 100 BC-25AD. <4> Henry F Hope, Antique Dealer, is listed by the Kelly's Directory of 1921 as at No 14 Castle Street. This residence is at present a greengrocery shop. Assuming that the finds were made opposite his shop then the find spot would probably be at SZ 15979271. <5>
