Full Description
K. Jarvis conducted a small rescue excavation at Druitt Gardens, Christchurch, during 1977 (site X14. The results were subsequently published as a short note in DNHAS monograph 5 (1).
The excavations revealed evidence for late medieval activity. The earliest features were 13th-15th century and included a shallow pit or post-hole [F9] containing 13th-15th century sherds, and a long sided vertical trench [F3] containing 13th-14th century sherds. [F3] was aligned down the slope and is probably a field drain. A multiphase ditch [F4, 6, 7] 0.3m deep, also extended across the excavation area and the earliest two phases dated to the 13th-14th centuries.
There were also six undated post-holes averaging 0.2m deep and an undated ditch [F1] 0.4m deep.
Roman tegula and 3rd/4th century pottery, all residual, may indicate Roman settlement towards the south-west corner of Christchurch. (1)
