Monument record MDO8775 - Bridge Street Island, Christchurch; pre-modern ditch
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
An archaeological evaluation at Bridge Street Island, Christchurch, during 1995, revealed an undated ditch [06]. It is sealed by a layer which pre-dates a modern layer and it contains no modern inclusions. This might suggest that the ditch is of some antiquity, possibly an early boundary for the back plots of properties fronting on to Bridge Street.

Full Description
Southern Archaeological Services conducted an archaeological evaluation at Bridge Street Island, Christchurch, during 1995 in advance of construction of a flood bank. The results were subsequently published as a short note in PDNHAS volume 117 (1) Although much of the monument description below is derived from an unpublished client report (2).
Excavation of two evaluation trenches revealed an undated ditch [06] cutting across the northern end of Trench 1. it was aligned approximately E-W, c. 2.5m wide and steep sided. It was excavated to a depth of c.0.9m but not bottomed due to waterlogging. It was sealed by a layer which pre-dates a modern layer and it contains no modern inclusions. This might suggest that the ditch is of some antiquity, possibly an early boundary for the back plots of properties fronting on to Bridge Street.
