[SY 58939919] ST HELEN'S CHAPEL [GT] (site of) (1)
The chapel of St. Helen was situated in the N.E. of the parish, and the actual site is still known. A chantry chapel, it was founded by Walter de la Wile, Bp. of Sarum, at the petition
of Wm Punsond of Chilerome. Land was given for the maintenance of a priest, who took office in 1267. In the chantry Roll the chapel ws valued a £6.7.0.
The incumbent in 1553 had a pension of £5. p.a. In 3.Ed VI it was granted to Giles Kellaway. (2)
3. No information concerning the site of this chapel is known other than the O.S. published site. this field is permanent pasture & "I have never encountered any building debris in the area". (3)
4. No remains of a building are to be seen at the site given in T.1 which is situated in a pasture field at the SE end of a slight promontory. There does, however, appear to have been some 'scarping' of the natural slopes on the south & east side - possibly for levelling the ground surface. No bulding debris
was found in the many molehills in the area. (4)
