Full Description

Parish Church of St Mary, Puddletown built of rubble, flint and brickwork with ashlar dressings contains the remains of a 12th century church including the lower portions of the south and west walls of the tower. The remainder of the church consists of the remodelling, enlargement and rebuilding undertaken between the 13th and 16th centuries with restorations in the 18th and 19th century and 1910. (See plan for details). <2> Parish Church of St Mary. Plan of nave, North aisle of 4 bays, chancel with North chapel of 2 bays, South transept and vestry, North and South porches, West tower. C12th tub font with diaper patterning. <3> Two fragments of Saxon cross are now incorporated in the NW pier in the chancel. Both were found when a house called 'Styles' was pulled down. These were placed in the church when the chancel was rebuilt in 1911. The upper fragment appears to be a cross-arm of 9th-10th century date; the lower is a grave marker of probable 11th century date. <6>
