Full Description
The site of a rope walk identified from the 1890 Ordnance Survey map. (1)
Rope walk shown on the Ordnance Survey 25-inch maps Epoch 1 and 2 running along the south side of Blandford Road (then Hamworthy Road). This rope walk appears to have comprised two parts: a covered rope walk, open to the north, in the eastern part and an open rope walk to the west. A block of three buildings at the eastern end may be associated with the rope walk and to the south of the west end of the covered walk is what is probably a twine store.
The ropewalk had been demolished before the mid 1920s and replaced by the Owen Carter Almshouses. (4)
AC archaeology excavated an evaluation trench across the ropewalk in 1999. (5) Two postholes were found, which may relate to the rope walk.
