Summary

A 19th century garden associated with Highcliffe Castle is visible on the 1st edition 25 inch ordnance survey map. This comprises curving gravel paths, walled gardens and plantations. Evidence for the garden paths was excavated by Wessex Archaeology in 1997 in advance of the restoration of the gardens. The layout was found to conform to that depicted on the OS map.

Full Description

A 19th century garden associated with Highcliffe Castle is visible on the 1st edition 25 inch ordnance survey sheets of the area(1-4). This comprises curving gravel paths, walled gardens and plantations (1). Evidence for the garden paths was excavated by Wessex Archaeology in 1997 in advance of the restoration of the gardens. The layout was found to conform to that depicted on the OS map (5).
