Summary
The Verne Quarry Battery was located at East Weare Camp and constructed in 1940-1. It was constructed of concrete and some of the buildings and gun emplacements are still extant.

Full Description
Coast artillery battery, in bad condition. Coastal battery. Remains of gun emplacements and a number of original buildings are clearly visible and in good condition. However, there are also a large number of modern buildings in the area, including some built over earlier features. [information from 1996 aerial photographs]. East Weare Second World War coastal battery is visible as a structure on aerial photographs of the 1940s <4> and recent aerial imagery <5> to the east of the Verne Citadel, Portland. Gun emplacements and associated buildings are visible over an area measuring approximately 130 m by 82 m. A second battery, constructed in the 1900s is located to the north (see linked record). This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
