Summary

Poole coastal battery, an emergency battery located on Brownsea Island at the entrance to Poole Harbour. It was commissioned in May 1940 as part of Southern Command's coastal defences. The battery was constructed of concrete and reinforced concrete and mounted two 6-inch naval guns. Aerial photography from 1982 shows the two gun emplacements surviving in good condition and that two coast artillery searchlight structures also remain. One to two ancillary buildings survive in reasonable condition. The present cafe was originally the officer's mess and the National Trust agent's house was the wartime sergeant's mess. A report of 2000 found the structures to be extant.
