Full Description

`A violent gale of wind at about SSW, attended with a very high tide, was experienced at Plymouth, Falmouth, and Penzance, on Saturday night and Sunday morning.' (2) `The TROIS AMIS...was totally lost near Bridport during the gale on Sunday night...And a French chasse maree, laden with wine, was totally lost on Charmouth Beach with all the crew. Cargo saved.' (2) `Lyme, Jan. 20. Yesterday it blew a fresh gale from SSE, and during the night increased to a hurricane which occasioned the highest tide ever known here; at 5 o'clock this morning, a vessel, with a light on the mast head, was seen off the harbour, which went ashore, and was totally wrecked three miles to the eastward; crew perished; (it is supposed she was French, as several hogsheads of wine have come ashore)...'
