Full Description

`Extract of a letter from Lime in Dorsetshire, dated Oct. 10. On the 26th of September last, in the evening, there was the most violent storm that ever was known in these parts: the wind from SE to SSW. It being on the top of a spring tide, the sea was much higher than was ever known in the memory of man...2 vessels drove out of the Cobb...The other of them, laden with pin dust, butter and beer, bound for London, was driven upon the shore, and both ship and cargo lost. No person happened to be on board either of the ships, so that nobody was drowned. NB: Pin dust = filings of brass or other metal as a waste product of the pin-making industry. [OED](1) The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
