Full Description

Stranded/total loss (1) `Weymouth March 10th: Yesterday the French brig ARTHUR LE JUVENALE, laden with coffee and cotton, bound from St. Domingo to Havre de Grace, was totally lost on Laughton [sic] Beach. The captain and crew, except one boy, were saved. Cargo wholly lost. (2) `The YOUNG ARTHUR, Matenas, from St. Domingo to Havre, was driven on shore on Thursday, near Portland, and totally wrecked. One boy drowned. About 100 bags of coffee, and 10 of cotton, saved. (4) Source (1) states date of loss as 18-MAR-1821; (2) indicates 09-MAR-1821; and (3) indicates 08-MAR-1821. Master: Matenas, Crew Lost: 1. The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
