Full Description

General Depth: 14m 24-JUN-1980: Swedish coaster, known locally as SUDON (bell has been recovered) in position 50 30 58N, 02 25 36W. 13/14-JUL-1986: Dived on in 50 30 59N, 02 60 6W. Substantial vessel, which has yielded much non-ferrous metal. Large winches and boiler (standing 2.5 To 3m high) remain. Position could be 50 30 55N, 02 25 36W. 10-AUG-1988: Stands up to 3 m high in 50 30 35N, 02 25 21W in general depth 15m at lw. 26-SEP-1991: Least echo sounder depth 12.0 In general depth 14m. No scour. Lies on rocky seabed orientated 051/231 deg in a natural hollow in the rock, the sides of which are shallower than the wreck. (1) Still unidentified, although the ships bell bearing the name SUDON has been found in the wreck; hence the date of loss is speculative. Wreck lies in 12m and has yielded much non-ferrous metal. Large winches and a single boiler remain amongst the flattened and well-spread wreckage. Decca position (SW chain) Red (G) 0.16; Purple (F) 69.3. (N.B. no original sources have been cited to support the date of loss.) (2) Position 50 30.97N 2 25.60W taken from (5) Large winches, a boiler, a propeller shaft, and an iron propeller still lie beside the rather flattened main strucutre, which is broken and well spread. The highest part is the boiler, which stands 3m high. (2) 05-MAR-2009: Least multibeam depth was 11.69m in a general depth of 13.5m. No scour. Length 14.8m. Width 7.4m Height 1.8m. The wreck is orientated 045/225 degrees. Poor magnetic anomaly. 10-AUG-2009: Located in 5031.007N, 0226.141W [WGD]. The least multibeam depth was 11.69m. (6)(7) Charted by the UKHO as 'SUDON (POSSIBLY)'. (6)(7) The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
