Full Description

`Weymouth, Dec. 3. A large ship is now on fire 3 leagues W of Portland. She was first seen about three o clock this morning, and continues burning, now near ten. All the boats along shore are gone off, so we hope the people will be saved. (1) `The sloop FREDERICK, Colling, from Bayonne to Amsterdam, is burnt off Portland. The crew, and a quantity of specie, saved. (2) `The FREDERICK, of Stralsund, Emanuel Collins master, from Bayonne to Amsterdam, and burnt off Weymouth on the 3rd of December, the captain and five men saved, with 16 bags and part of bags of dollars, which are deposited in the Kings Chest at Weymouth. (3) Master: Colling (2); Emanuel Collins (3) Crew: at least 6 Date of Loss Qualifier: A The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
