`The JUNO, Brown (of Charleston), from Havre to Cork, was burnt off Portland 31st ult. Crew saved, and landed at Weymouth. (1) Master: Brown Date of Loss Qualifier: Date of Loss Qualifier: Actual date of loss 'Cowes, September 2. Information is just received, that on Tuesday evening, about 8 o clock, between the Needles and Pordand [sic] a brig under American colours was totally destroyed by fire. It is supposed to be the JUNO, laden with wine and burr stones, from Rouen to Cork, which put into these roads in the night of the 30th ult. It is not known with certainty if the whole of the crew escaped. Captain Brown told the Tide Surveyor he had been several yeas in the British service on board a man of war. Report says, that the fire first broke out in the cabin, by some sparks of a candle falling on some charts lying on the table.' (2) The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
