Full Description

The site of a ropery identified from an 1848 trade directory. The site was owned by Joseph Bartlett and Son and was used for the manufacture of twine line and shoe thread. <1> Joseph Bartlett & Sons are listed in the Trade Directories as twine, line and shoethread manufacturers in West Street from 1842 to 1855. The precise property in West Street has not been identified. Bartlett also had premises in East Street and in 1855 moved to West Allington and later to Barrack Street in the mid-1860s. <2>
