Full Description

`Shortly afterwards the SULTAN was dashed on the breakwater, listed over and sank. (2) `During a violent storm from the NW, all the vessels inside the breakwater rode out the gale with the exception of one. With both anchors down, the SULTAN dragged and was dashed against the breakwater to become a total wreck. The ROYAL ALFRED tug attempted to put a hawser on board which proved impossible, the two man crew of the smack being unable to launch their small boat since it had been damaged. A local lerret with eight men put out to her rescue, the smack striking the vessel so hard that it smashed in part of her gunwale. The tug put out again and towed the lerret boat back to shore. [(paraphrased from (2)](3). Master: Windar Crew: 2 Date of Loss Qualifier: A The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
