Type and Period (2)

Full Description

Wrecked at the same time as a Dutch vessel, both of which were plundered `by the savages of the country. (4) Stranded/Total Loss (4) `A ship, name unknown, upwards of 300 tons, was seen the 2nd instant about 4 miles to the westward of Portland Road, with her main and foremasts gone. They write, if the gale continued, it was impossible for her to ride it out. (3) Possibly a description of the vessel below, reported in the same issue: `The LA CARP, Burrell, from Havre for Rochford [sic], with timber for the dock, was lost about 9 miles to the westward of Weymouth, and 14 of the crew drowned. (3) At the time of loss the Julian Calendar was still in use in England, with the New Year beginning on 25th March. Therefore dates between 1st January and 24th March are one year later in modern reckoning (New Style) than those printed on Lloyds List (although other publications may follow New Style dating); the date of loss has therefore been amended to 1750 (New Style). Source (4) expresses the date of loss as FEB-1750 only. The entry for this vessel in source (4) appears under UNIDENTIFIED. Master: Burell Crew Lost: 14 D t The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
