Full Description

The Atlas `...went to pieces, nine men including the captain, saved. The vessel had left Rotterdam on December [sic] 20th. (2) `Weymouth, 7th Dec. The ATLAS, from Rotterdam to Charleston, was driven on shore this morning in Chiswell Cove, and two of the crew drowned. She will go to pieces next tide unless the wind shifts to the north. (3) `Weymouth, 9th Dec. The ATLAS, from Rotterdam to Charleston, on shore in Chiswell Cove, is become nearly a wreck. (4) Crew: 11 Crew Lost: 2 Date of Loss Qualifier: A Additional sources cited in United Kingdom Shipwreck Index: Sh.Journal 02.12.1831. The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
