Full Description

`The NEW SYREN, Hughes, from London to Liverpool, was wrecked on Portland Beach yesterday; 1 man and a boy drowned. (1) `Weymouth, November 6th. During a storm on Sunday last a brig from London to Liverpool was wrecked on Portland Beach; two of the crew unfortunately perished. The vessel and cargo are totally lost. (2) This vessel appears as UNIDENTIFIED, in source (3), which is based on source (2) only, and the date of loss is expressed as 00.11.1806. Source (1) indicates the date of loss as 03-NOV-1806, (2) as 02-NOV-1806. Master: Hughes Crew Lost: 2 Date of Loss Qualifier: A New Sarum {4} The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
