Full Description

Additional cargo was described only as `stores. (1)(5) `The PITT, Horn, a transport, is lost near St. Albans. Crew saved. (2) `The WILLIAM PITT (transport) is on shore near Poole. (3) On shore near Incomb (Encombe) west of St Oldham's (Aldhelm's) Head (5) The vessel type is given as a transport in (3), in the contemporary sense, which included the transport of ordnance and/or military stores. Built: 1776 Master: Horn (2); John Thorn (5) Date of Loss Qualifier: A Additional cargo was described only as `stores.' <1> `The PITT, Horn, a transport, is lost near St. Alban's. Crew saved.' A gale appears to have occurred, both from the number of vessels lost, and from the mention of other vessels `safe in Weymouth and Portland Roads after the gale.' <2> `The WILLIAM PITT (transport) is on shore near Poole.' <3> The vessel type is given as a transport in <2> in the contemporary sense, which included the transport of ordnance and/or military stores.
