Full Description

`From several London prints, Feb. 16...By letters from Pool, we have an account, that the DISPATCH, Guiller, of and for Plymouth, in going out of the harbour, the wind blowing fresh at east, drove on the sands, where 'tis feared she will be lost. (1) NB: Prior to the introduction of the modern calendar or New Style dating in England in 1752, the New Year began on 25th March. Thus dates between 1st January and 24th March in Old Style reckoning are included in what would be the previous year according to modern reckoning, or double-indexed with both Old and New Style years, as in the issue date of this report. The date is expressed in this record as modern reckoning only, i.e. 16-FEB-1738. Master: Guiller (1) Date of Loss Qualifier: R The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
