Full Description

`Extract of a letter from Lymington, dated Nov. 15. Last Saturday, about 3 in the afternoon, a vessel came ashore between this town and Christchurch, by which accident she bulged, and all her crew perished. She was a sloop of about 50 tons, with a pink stern, a white horse in her head, and her quarters painted green. 'Tis conjectured she sprung a leak, and they endeavoured to run her ashore; for she came under full sail and had two anchors in her head. The cries of the people were heard by some farmers who saw the vessel strike, the mast whereof immediately fell, and tore the main deck away with it. She was supposed to be laden with beef, 16 or 17 hogsheads of which came ashore, that was immediately carried off by the country people. Three of the men likewise drove ashore, one of whom was well- dressed; but they were soon stripped, and thrown into the sea again. (1) NB: A pink stern indicates that the vessel had the stern of a pink, not that her stern was painted pink. Crew Lost: all (1) Passengers: possibly at least one (1) Passengers Lost: all (1) Date of Loss Qualifier: A The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
