Full Description
Three portholes recovered from a wreck located 15 miles WSW Portland Bill. The Algarve was a British armed steamship torpedoed in 1917. (1) Vessel was torpedoed without warning at 3.50 a.m. by the German submarine UB 38, the weapon exploding against No. 3 hold, port side, causing the ship to sink immediately. The crew got into the port boat, but just as it reached the water the vessel fell over on top of them, taking down the boat and three men. These three got hold of wreckage and managed to stay afloat until picked up at 8.40 a.m. by a patrol vessel and landed at Weymouth, but the rest of the crew drowned. (3)
