Full Description

A group of quarries to the south and east of Chapel Hill, which itself lies to the south west of the village of Abbotsbury. The quarries are visible as a complex of depressions, variable in form, with dimensions of 5 metres to 10 metres across and up to circa 0.5 metres to 1 metre in depth. A larger quarry is located to the east side of the hill. It seems likely that these quarries were worked to produce stone used in the construction of St Peters Abbey. <1> The quarries are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and Lidar imagery <2-3> and were digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.
