Full Description

Wytch Farm Oilfield, Late Iron Age Site, East of Corfe River. Geophysical survey and Trial pitting produced evidence of 'extensive archaeological deposits' along the pipeline corridor. Ditches and pits were observed cut into the subsoil and a small number of stratified finds recovered. An earlier phase of works (August 1988) had already identified major Iron Age ditches, pits and gullies, some of which contained dumps or middens of marine shells. Native and imported pottery were also recovered from the ditches. The results of both phases of work suggest a major Iron Age / Early Roman settlement & possibly industrial site lies in the area of plots 1 and 2. The 'new' site was thought likely to provide a useful comparison with the already known site at Cleaval Point. (1)
