Full Description

During defensive measures for World War II, Chesil Beach was considered unsuitable for vehicular access and did not offer very good access to the interior. However, the beach did offer the chance to attack the vital naval installations at Portland and was therefore made a Class I Landing Beach and accordingly defended with barbed wire, pillboxes, an anti-tank ditch and beach defence artillery.
