Full Description
Watching brief along route of water pipeline October 1991. Pipeline ran through area of high known archaeological potential.
UNDATED FEATURES were numerous along the route. Most were field boundaries or drainage ditches.
IRON AGE and ROMANO-BRITISH features were observed in two main concentrations (site 5 and site 7) .
Site 5 comprised 3 possible pits or ditches cutting several distinct occupation horizons. Two of the ditches and all of the occupation layers appeared to of Romano-British origin. The third ditch was either Romano-British or Early Medieval. Medieval pottery found in association with the Roman deposits was thought to be residual / intrusive, having been introduced during the laying of field drains. However, the quantity of medieval pottery recovered indicated the presence nearby of Medieval settlement.
Site 7 was characterised by a buried soil layer containing Romano-British pottery of 2nd-3rd century date(1).
