Two Late Neolithic pits discovered in trial trench excavated on Ridgeway Hill in advance of A354-A353 Dorchester to Weymouth road improvements.

Full Description

Pits located on crest of ridge apparently containing upright posts packed with chalk rubble incorporating finds derived from midden but not simply a rubbish pit, associations with ritual suggested. Pits themselves contained sherds of Grooved Ware pottery, pieces of worked flint, animal bone, marine shells and worked chalk lump. Burial of polecat in pit 2230. Pit 2230 1.5m diameter and 0.9m deep, pit 2232 1.1m diameter and 0.8m deep
