Monument record MWX3352 - Main Entrance Gateway and High Perimeter Wall, Portland Castle

16th century wall and gateway rebuilt in later periods.

Archaeological survey of high wall next to main gate. Wall is 12.3m long and up to 5m high above present ground level. Built entirely from Portland stone and is now crenellated. Four constructional phases from 16th century, 17th century, late17th/early18th century and 19th century. Re-pointed in late 20th century, recording of historic mortars not possible. Outer face built of coursed ashlar with a Tudor (four centred) arch built in two chamfered orders. Plaque dating from Charles II 1660. Inner face largely rubble masonry with some ashlar facework and dressings.
