Summary
Pieces of black burnished ware found during archaeological investigations in the ‘Governor’s Garden’. Some of this pottery came from a layer interpreted as a cultivation layer of probable Roman date.

Full Description
Five sherds of Roman black burnished pottery recovered from 'Governor's Garden' and one recovered from within the castle wall during watching brief. Four sherds from 'Governor's Garden' came from layer interpreted as Roman cultivation soil or plough soil. Deposits directly overly prehistoric layers (findspot WX3353). All sherds date form the late 3rd or 4th century. In Roman times site possibly farmed or within a garden. Pottery may have arrived at the site through manuring. No structural remains found but only a small fraction of site investigated (1)
