Full Description
Tidal mills sited to Weymouth from OS 6 1962) (Marginal) Miss M Holmes, the Dorset archivist, suggests that there may have been two tidal mills at Weymouth. In a Letter Patent of 1618, it states that on 28/10/1568 "the freemen of Weymouth shall have half the cartage and rents of a Watter Mill and of the Cuniger of Melcombe Regis". A deed of 12/6/1590 states that Raynold Chamynge sold to his son the moiety of "a plot pere of grounde, the Arme of the Sea Milles thereupon erected". The mills probably stood on the wall which enclosed an arm of the sea running west from Weymouth harbour. This arm of the sea was reclaimed in the mid to late eighteenth century, the sea wall lies under Marsh Road. <1>
