Full Description

Three medieval pits were found during a watching brief undertaken by Southern Archaeological Services Ltd on the site of the Bridport Tannery in 1998. All were within the area of the former property containing the tannery.(1) (2) Pit 78 was found in the northwest part of the site and was a small pit with steeply-sloping sides and a flat bottom, about 1.6m across and 0.95m deep. The lowest fill was a layer of brown silty clay containing animal bone, above which was a layer of dark greyish-brown silty clay containing 13th century pottery and an iron nail and the remainder of the pit was filled with brown silty clay containing 13th/14th century pottery.(1) Pit 71 lay in the northeastern corner of the site and was a steep-sided pit about 0.9m deep filled with dark greyish-brown silty clay containing a fragment of glazed medieval roof tile and some daub fragments.(1) Pit 73 lay adjacent to pit 71 and was a large pit measuring 2.2m across and over 1.7m deep. It was filled with a layer of black silt in the lower part and very dark grey silty clay loam above, containing a single sherd of 12/13th century pottery.(1)
