The Lower Lighthouse is marked on the first edition of the OS map. Built 1869 by Trinity House to replace an earlier lighthouse of 1789.

Full Description
The Lower Lighthouse is marked on the second edition OS map as having a fixed white light. (1) An earlier lighthouse also appears on this site on the 1840 Tithe Map of Portland. (2) Built 1869 by Trinity House to replace a lighthouse of 1789, at same time as Higher Light, and both with keepers' accommodation alongside. Redundant in 1906 when present lighthouse at the Bill was opened. Became a bird observatory with accommodation in 1962.(3-5) Depicted in numerous published historic photographs.
