Full Description

In 1880 a number of structures were found during quarrying operations. These are variously called dene-holes and beehive chambers They were cut out of the rock, were from 8 to 10 ft deep and of similar diameter at the bottom. A small aperture in the top, just below soil level was about 16ins in diameter. A quantity of carbonised wheat seems to have been found in these structures (1) (2). These dene-holes or beehive huts were noticed by MR WALLIS in fragment of Ro pottery was also found in one of the structures, which were probably storage pits. (3). Judged by the date these dene-holes would have been found in KM SY 6872. (4) KM 6872 has been almost entirely quarried out, There were no surface finds or trace of antiquity. (5)
