Summary

The site of a post-medieval gravel pit visible as an earthwork along the side of the Southampton and Dorchester Railway branch line to Hamworthy known from map evidence and visible on aerial photographs taken in 1948. Possibly associated with the construction of the railway in 1845-7.

Full Description

The site of a post medieval gravel pit is visible as a long rectangular linear earthwork along the north side of the Southampton and Dorchester railway branch line to Hamworthy. It is labelled 'Old Gravel Pit' on the Ordnance Survey 25-inch map epochs 1 and 2. (1) (2) and is visible on aerial photographs (3) taken in 1948. It is possibly associated with the railway construction between 1845 and 1847? The site is not visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. (4/5) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
