Full Description

A Quarry is marked on the 1845 Bothenhampton Tithe Map, comprising most of the area of Plot No 297 ('Rickthorn') and a smaller linear quarry area in the southern part of Plot No 298 ('Wally Close') to the southwest. These two quarried areas are shown separate. But on the 1890 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map, the two quarries appear to have merged together. The quarry is disused by 1890. The Bothenhampton Tithe Apportionment names Sir Molyneux Hyde NEPEAN Bart as land owner of plot 297, occupied by Harry SAUNDERS Rickthorn and plot 298 was owned and occupied by Thomas GARLAND. A number of old quarries are marked on the OS 1st edition map in the vicinity of Middlehill Farm, Bothenhampton. They were identified on aerial photographs and lidar imagery and were digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP project (2-3).
