Monument record MWX4355 - Lucy's Jetty, Cobb Gate Beach, Lyme Regis

A stone built jetty built in 1820 and substantially repaired after a storm in 1840.

A jetty shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1885. (1)shown on later editions as Lucy's Jetty (2) Lucy’s Jetty dates from about 1820 when Sir Henry de la Beche raised a subscription to build a jetty to stem the movement of sand and pebbles to wards Marine Parade. Originally called De la Beche’s Jetty the name Lucy comes from the name of the boat which Henry Frank, Town Clerk of Lyme Regis kept moored to the Jetty in the 1850’s. Originally built of Blue Lias stone with a capping of Portland Stone, the Jetty was about 30 metres long. It soon showed signs of wear and the southern end was replaced after a storm in 1840. other repairs took place during the later nineteenth century. A photograph of 1903 shows the jetty essentially as it is today (3) The line of this jetty is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1951 (4). It is no longer extant nor visible on photographs taken in 2009 (5). The feature was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
