Summary

France Quarries, marked on the second edition of the OS map. Now site. There was a small quarry at Crown Farm in 1863. In 1901, quarrying had extended southwards, behind the buildings in Easton Street. The site has been mostly backfilled and is covered with rough vegetation. There are waste stone banks and a small structure (shelter) but all extremely overgrown and difficult to interpret. France Quarries were still at work in 1960.

Full Description

France Quarries, marked on the second edition of the OS map (1) Site. There was a small quarry at Crown Farm (SY 69287210) in 1863. (2) In 1901, quarrying had extended southwards, behind the buildings in Easton Street. (3) Some of these were backfilled and work was progressing to the east in 1926. There was a very small quarry near Easton Foundry. (4) The site has been mostly backfilled and is covered with rough vegetation. At SY 69327197, however, there are waste stone banks and a small structure (shelter) but all extremely overgrown and difficult to interpret. They appear to represent workings later than 1926. France Quarries were at work here in 1960. (5-6)
