Summary

Freshwater Quarries, marked on the second edition OS map. Narrow cliff-quarrying here in 1863 but little work since. Wide quarry ledge followed by a track (coast path) with good exposure of stone beds on landward side and some evidence of stone-cutting. The quarry is visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s.

Full Description

Freshwater Quarries, marked on the second edition OS map. (1) Narrow cliff-quarrying here in 1863 but little work since. (2-4) Wide quarry ledge followed by a track (coast path), SY 69057005 to SY 69056995, with good exposure of stone beds on landward side and some evidence of stone-cutting. Small overgrown quarry remnant at SY 6896 6990. (4) The coastal quarry, Freshwater Quarries, described above (in 1-4) is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s to the north of Sheat Quarries. The quarry is visible over an area measuring approximately 50 m by 52 m. (5) The site is still visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. (6) A second quarry is located immediately to the west (see MDO19530). This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
