Monument record MWX4418 - Earthworks associated with a post medieval Rifle Range, Dungy Head, Lulworth Cove

Summary
A group of hollows partially surrounded by outer banks are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of Dungy Head. They lie within the extents of a rifle range marked on the first and second editions of the OS map (see also MWX3984 & MDO29374) and are considered likely to be associated with it.

Full Description
A rifle range by Lulworth Cove marked on the first edition OS map (1). It is marked as a target with distances marked in increments of 100 yards up to 500 yards. Also marked on the second edition map (2)
A group of hollows partially surrounded by outer banks are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of Dungy Head (3). They lie within the extents of a rifle range described above (see also MWX3984 & MDO29374) and are considered likely to be associated with it. These features were digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset). They are not visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial images available to the project.
