Full Description

A Coastguard Watch House was built on the summit of Warren Hill before 1846 as it is marked as 'Co. Gd Watch Ho. Built on the site of the old Warren Summer House' on a chart by Commander Sheringham surveyed 1846. (1) A 'Watch House (Coastguard Service)' is shown on the Ordnance Survey 25-inch map epoch 1 (1871), but is not shown on later maps. There is a flag pole within a small rectangular enclosure in front of the Watch House. (2) This Watch House was replaced by another lookout house in 1926. (3) The earthwork remains of the watch house are visible on undated aerial photographs (possibly 1960s). Small rectangular banked enclosures indicate the sites of the two buildings marked on the 1st OS map (see 2). A short length of bank lies parallel to the buildings and may have marked the edge of the property. (4) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
