Full Description
The Steamer Patroclus was stranded on Blacknor Point, Portland on 13th September 1907. She was towed off on the 22nd. (1)
The Blue Funnel Liner Patroclus was homeward bound from Brisbane on 13th September 1907 when she ran onto Blacknor Point on Portland in dense fog. There were no passengers on board and, in the calm weather, there were no difficulties in rescuing the crew by breeches buoy, but saving the ship was more difficult. Initial inspection showed fourteen foot of water in the forward hold. Despite this, with eleven steam pumps working on the deck, and five tugs pulling, she was dragged off the rocks and later successfully repaired.(3)
The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
